_ **The Iron Wall: Zionist Revisionism from Jabotinsky to Shamir** _ is a 1984 book by the American Trotskyist [Lenni Brenner](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenni_Brenner "Lenni Brenner"). It is a highly critical account of the development of [Revisionist Zionism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revisionist_Zionism "Revisionist Zionism"). The name of the book is a reference to [an essay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Wall_(essay) "Iron Wall (essay)") written by [Ze’ev Jabotinsky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ze'ev_Jabotinsky "Ze'ev Jabotinsky") in 1923.[[1]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Iron_Wall%3A_Zionist_Revisionism_from_Jabotinsky_to_Shamir#cite_note-1)

# What is Revisionist Zionism? Answer: Genocidal Israel Today

**Revisionist Zionism** [1] ([Hebrew](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_language "Hebrew language"): ציונות רוויזיוניסטית, [romanized](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Hebrew "Romanization of Hebrew"):_Ṣiyyônût Revîzyônîstît_) is a form of [Zionism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zionism "Zionism") characterized by territorial maximalism. Revisionist Zionism promoted [expansionism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansionism "Expansionism") and the establishment of a [Jewish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish "Jewish") majority on both sides of the [Jordan River](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan_River "Jordan River").[[1]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revisionist_Zionism#cite_note-FOOTNOTEZouplna20083%E2%80%9327-1) Developed by [Ze’ev Jabotinsky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ze'ev_Jabotinsky "Ze'ev Jabotinsky") in the 1920s, Revisionism advocated a “revision” of the “[practical Zionism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Practical_Zionism "Practical Zionism")” of [David Ben-Gurion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Ben-Gurion "David Ben-Gurion") and [Chaim Weizmann](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaim_Weizmann "Chaim Weizmann"), which was focused on the settling of _Eretz Yisrael_ (ארץ ישראל, ‘[the] [Land of Israel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_of_Israel "Land of Israel")’) by independent Jewish individuals. Differing from other [types of Zionism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_Zionism "Types of Zionism"), Revisionists insisted upon the Jewish right to sovereignty over the whole of _Eretz Yisrael_, including [Mandatory Palestine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandatory_Palestine "Mandatory Palestine") and [Transjordan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emirate_of_Transjordan "Emirate of Transjordan"). It was the main ideological opponent to the dominant labor–socialist [Labor Zionism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Zionism "Labor Zionism").[[2]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revisionist_Zionism#cite_note-FOOTNOTETzahor198815%E2%80%9325-2) Revisionist Zionism has strongly influenced modern right-wing Israeli parties, principally [Herut](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herut "Herut") and its successor, [Likud](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Likud "Likud").

# What is Jabotinsky?

After [World War I](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I "World War I"), Jabotinsky was elected to the first legislative assembly in the [Yishuv](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yishuv "Yishuv"), and in 1921 he was elected to the Executive Council of the [Zionist Organization](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Zionist_Organization "World Zionist Organization") (known as the World Zionist Organization after 1960). He quit the latter group in 1923, thanks mainly to differences of opinion with its chairman, [Chaim Weizmann](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaim_Weizmann "Chaim Weizmann"). In 1925, Jabotinsky formed the [Hatzohar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatzohar "Hatzohar"), the Union of Revisionist Zionists, in the [World Zionist Congress](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Zionist_Congress "World Zionist Congress") to advocate his views, which included increased cooperation with Britain on transforming the entire [Mandate for Palestine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandatory_Palestine "Mandatory Palestine") territory, including Palestine itself and Transjordan, on opposite sides of the [Jordan River](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan_River "Jordan River"), into a sovereign Jewish state, loyal to the [British Empire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Empire "British Empire"). To this end, Jabotinsky advocated for mass Jewish immigration from Europe and the creation of a second [Jewish Legion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Legion "Jewish Legion") to guard a nascent Jewish state at inception. Jabotinsky wished to convince Britain that a Jewish state would be in the best interest of the British Empire, perhaps even an autonomous extension of it in the [Middle East](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East "Middle East").
