UAE presidential diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash says Gulf states have no choice but to engage with neighbouring Iran, arguing that geography makes dialogue unavoidable despite deepening tensions and broken trust.
Speaking at the Hili Forum 2026 in Abu Dhabi, Gargash said restoring practical relations with Iran would be possible, but rebuilding confidence after Iranian attacks on Gulf states would be far more difficult. He called for serious and sustainable de-escalation focused on security, non-interference, freedom of navigation and economic cooperation.
Gargash also stressed the global importance of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that disruption to the key waterway could threaten energy, trade and food security well beyond the Gulf. He urged a long-term diplomatic approach as the UAE looks to protect alternative trade and energy routes while keeping dialogue with Iran open.
